Orlando Pirates defender Bongani Sam is in limbo after being released by Moroka Swallows under controversial circumstances, the Siya crew understands.

Sam was one of the Swallows players that had to leave the club after the December player strike led to major changes in the playing squad and technical team.

Siya sources have indicated that Sam was not supposed to be one of the many players released, and the situation is being reassessed while there are question marks whether he can return to play for Pirates.

"It was very unfortunate that he found himself in that situation (at Swallows). Maybe he could have been one of the players to come back to the team but you know he was on loan from Orlando Pirates and his situation was different because it had to involve another team," said the Siya source.

"From what I know he is not at Swallows and he is not at Pirates. I really don't know what will happen between now and the end of the season because the only team he can go to is Pirates at the moment and he is not there," the source added to Soccer Laduma.

A second Siya source stated that Sam didn't return to Pirates yet and it's not clear why this is the case so far.

"He has not been at Pirates yet. Yes, he belongs to Pirates and he should go back there but I think there are other issues which need to be sorted out first. It's sad that he is finding himself in this situation as a player when things were going very well for him at Pirates," said the second Siya source.

"But hopefully he will rejoin his team before the end of the season because he belongs there," the source concluded to Soccer Laduma.

Last season Sam was loaned twice, to Maritzburg United and Moroka Swallows, and this time the 26-year-old has played 13 PSL matches and two cup games for the Birds.

Soccer Laduma contacted Pirates for comment but not response was received by the time this story was published.
