How Downs & Pirates Could Disadvantage Bafana

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos will have the challenge of managing the players of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, who will end their season on June 1, just six days before the senior national team's clash away from home against Nigeria. 

Bafana are set to visit Nigeria for a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on June 7, and the challenge Broos is going to have in the team is the load Sundowns players will be carrying after a hectic period in May.

Sundowns already have a difficult schedule in May, with three matches played so far this month. They have five more matches to play this month in the DStv Premiership, before playing in the Nedbank Cup final on June 1.

The likes of Ronwen Williams, Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba, Mothobi Mvala, Thapelo Morena and Themba Zwane, with Tashreeq Matthews understood to be in with a chance of getting a call-up. It's unclear at this stage if midfielder Teboho Mokoena will be back in time to play the Nedbank Cup final or even feature for the national team against the Super Eagles. 

The Nedbank Cup final will be played on Saturday and the players are expected to join Bafana Bafana the following day, or latest Monday morning, to prepare for their trip to Nigeria. 

Like Sundowns, Pirates have played played three matches in May and have three more to play this month before taking on the Brazilians in the final on the first day of June.

Tshegofatso Mabasa, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng are some of the players expected to feature in the squad for the clash against Nigeria.

Striker Evidence Makgopa could also get a call-up and a big advantage for him is that he recently returned from injury, so he is not carrying the same load in terms of minutes when compared to other players.
