Shabba on dreaming big

Siphiwe Tshabalala is destined to leave a lasting mark on South African sporting history, not just local football.

Whether it's for his remarkable tenure at Kaizer Chiefs or his unforgettable opening goal for Bafana Bafana during the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Mexico, Shabba stands as a true powerhouse in African football.

Shabba sat down with Marawa on 94.7, and was asked if he was confident during his developmental years as a player, that he'd go on to enjoy such a successful career, which came with plenty of fame and Shabba answered:

"Honestly? Yes. I've always dreamt big. Even at school, you know those moments where a teacher would ask you: 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' and I was very specific, I would say: 'I want to be the best footballer, I want to play for Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs and play abroad," says Shabba, who manifested his childhood dreams.

"You don't have to limit yourself, it's free to dream. So, I used to dream a lot, I used to visualise a lot. So much so that, when I would tell my friends, they would think: 'No man, that one is too big for you, calm down.' But, in my mind, I would see things and I would work hard to achieve those goals.

"The beauty about dreaming and believing in yourself, even if the dream is a bit far fetched, but once you achieved a goal, be it your first goal, then you can see that anything that you want can be achieved. After that, it's goals after goals, short term, mid term or long term, you keep going..." adds Shabba.

The Soweto-born and bred baller's achievements on the pitch have held him in great stead off it, as he enjoys an abundance of brand deals from Future Life and Betway among many and although he's yet to retire from football, he get the legends treatment wherever he goes.

It took more than just goals and dribbles for Shabba to build such a successful brand for himself — he actively worked on elevating his name during the peak of his playing, instead of waiting to hang up his boots.

When asked about what's keeping him busy beyond parenthood and playing football, he said:

"I'm working with brands, doing work with brands is my job and that keeps me busy. If I did not invest on the brand, Siphiwe Tshabalala back then, I would've encountered so many problems. It's an investment I made at the beginning of my career."
